New Networks for a New Local Music

A plea for more intercultural musical exchanges between Switzerland and the Balkans, presented at the International Symposium «Urban Music in the Balkans» in Tirana 2006.

When it comes to music from the Balkans, most of the concert organisers, music journalists and audiences in Switzerland ask for musical «diversity». They select certain musicians and ensembles, which they believe to be traditional. Or they jump on the latest trends in club culture, and book DJ’s and producers who melt electronic beats with «traditional» Balkan melodies and instruments. The losers are – as elsewhere in the world of music - the musicians and composers who try to create more complex, contemporary, well developed musical languages. And: The musicians who do not know how to sell themselves, how to network successfully, how to contact foreign arts councils.

In the process of intense “Europeanisation”, which for the citizens of southeastern Europe has in recent years gone beyond mere current politics, taking the shape of a distinct struggle for a “better life”, whose outcome is within reach and which, as was formulated in one of the oft repeated phrases, “can and should be led by each one of us”, the idea of the Balkans as a unique cultural area has attained a new vigor. After the winds of war at the end of the 20th century, and in spite of the still unresolved Kosovo issue, the Balkans as a region in which models of multicultural social communities have existed for centuries, has once again become a metaphorical (yet also real) area which has something to offer to Europe and the world.

Material World u konceptua si ide dhe u botua ne 1994 si nje liber i ilustruar me te dhena te marra nga ekspertet e OKB-se dhe te Bankes Boterore, dhe foto kryesisht te realizuara nga Peter Manzel dhe prej nje grupi fotografesh. Iniciatori dhe autori i librit eshte vet Peter Manzel. Shifrat dhe fotografite deshmojne per larmine e arkitektures te banesave, “landscape”-it perreth, madhesise te familjeve, veshjeve, etj. Mbi gjithshka, te impresionon dramaticiteti i prezantimit te inventarit material te orendive te shtepise, prej objekteve me te vogla, deri tek ato me te medha, te ekspozuara shumica perpara banesave perkatese.

Duke udhetuar ne pjesen veriore te Shqiperise, perkthyesi i shpjegon Dusko Doder-it se disa nga shtepite e hereshme te rrafshuara kohe me pare, me guret e themeleve te shperndara sic diktohej nga rregullat e kanunit, ishin shtepite e atyre qe kishin thyer besen. Shqiptaret sot, nuk e ndeshkojne njeri-tjetrin ne nje menyre te tille. Sic veren autori, shqiptaret e kane teper te veshtire te premtojne dicka, sado e parendesishme te jete ajo; ata nuk e marrin persiper te bejne dicka per ty, nese e gjykojne se nuk do te jene ne gjendje te mbajne fjalen e dhene. Shqiptaret stepen, ndruhen se, duke mos mbajtur fjalen, thyejne ne kete menyre besen.

Gazetari me origjine serbo-shqiptare, Dusko Doder, eshte nder te paret njerez te medias perendimore qe shkeli Shqiperine ne dhjetor te 1990-te; ndersa shkrimin per National Geographic e pergatiti ne nje nga vizitat e mevoneshme, ne pranvere te vitit 1992. Udhetimi ne kilometrat e pare brenda kufirit shqiptar, ka reminishencat e dialogut qe zhvillohet midis konsullit francez bonapartist dhe ndihmesit te tij ne romanin e Ivo Andricit Kronike Ballkanase. Me te kaluar kufirit, ne cdo kilometer ne thellesi te tokes shqiptare, rruga ngushtohej e perkeqsohej, - nuk ishte e mirembajtur. Cdo njeriu do t’i linde dyshimi, se nje gje e tille ishte bere me qellim: per te mbajtuar te huajt, “pushtuesit” jashte ketij territori. Sic thote autori, mjaftonin vetem disa llokume dinamit, per te hedhur ne ere rrepirat shkembore ne ane te rruges e per te bllokuar me copat e shkembinjve te rrezuar prej shperthimit, kalimin e ngushte automobilistik.

Ne mendjen time, qe ne feminine me te hereshme ai ishte dhe mbeti qytetar i nje Shqiperie tjeter, i nje Shqiperie qe une ne te vertete nuk e njihja dhe nuk e njoha kurre. Mbase i nje Shqiperie qe nuk egzistonte gjetiu pervecse ne perfytyrimin tim te hallakatur.

Jo vetem sot, jo thjesht per ate qe ka ndodhur, por edhe shume vite me pare, ne gjallje te tij, atehere kur kisha privilegjin te beja ndonje cope rruge me te, mendja gjithnje me ka qene fiksuar te ideja se vepra me madheshtore e Ramadan Sokolit ka qene dinjiteti i tij. Ai mbeti i denje edhe ne nje kohe krejt te padenje.

Profesorin e nderuar e kam takuar për herë të parë në vitin 1970, pikërisht me 26 dhjetor në Tiranë. Atë kohë patëm shkuar unë kompozitori dhe profesori Lorenc Antoni në Festivalin tradicional që mbahej për çdo vjet, Kënga në Radio, njëra prej festivaleve të shumtë tradicionale që i këndohej Partisë së punës së Shqipërisë, kooperativistit, shokut Enver dhe tërë plejadës së udhëheqësve partiak, si përfaqësues të Shoqatës së kompozitorëve të Kosovës në kuadrin e marrëveshjes në mes të Shoqatës së kompozitorëve të Kosovës dhe Lidhjes së shkrimtarëve dhe artistëve të Shqipërisë për këmbimet reciproke.
