Newly Established International Folk's “Oscars”

For four days, from 8th to 11th of May, two southern Italian towns, San Severo and Alto Tavogliere in Puglia, became "the reference points” of international folklore as the First Festival of Popular Traditions took place there. The Festival offered space and opportunity to all the lovers of pizzica and taranta with a rich program relevant to the art and traditions of folklore. The event celebrated the lifelong contributions of several international renowned folklore collectors, scholars, musicians, ethnomusicologists from different places of the world. It was the first event of this nature and scale.

Jammin’ The Blues

Some of the most vivid and rare portrait of jazz musicians in action during the 1930s and 1940s came in the form of the Hollywood movies and the so-called “soundies”, stand-alone shorts of the big bands that were packed with feature films. Frequently, popular bands such as those of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Jimmie Lunceford, Woody Herman, Jimmy Dorsey and Glenn Miller were the biggest draws of the otherwise mostly forgettable films in which they appeared. However, as valuable as these music sequences 60 and 70 years ago might be, they are remembered partly for their Hollywood embellishment rather than for probing for the music itself or its creators on a deeper level.

In July 2, 1944, Norman Granz presented a jazz concert (actually a series of glorified Jam Sessions) at the Philharmonic Auditorium in Los Angeles; thus, the name Jazz At the Philharmonic(JATP as it was labeled by the media).

JATP was the forerunner of the outdoor jazz festivals as well as jazz concerts in classical concerts.

Another important factor was that the concert was recorded and released unedited commercially and the recording engineer, dressed in military uniform and acting for the AFN radio was also a great man by the name of Jimmy Lyon, the founder of Monterrey Jazz Festival.

Pėr njerėzit qė kanė dhėnė kontribut tė vecantė dhe rezultate tė shėnuara nė fusha tė caktuara shkencore nuk mjaftohet sė shkruari. Punėt e tyre bėhen objekt hulumtimi e studimi nė forma tė ndryshme. Njė personalitet i rendit tė parė tė shkencave albanologjike pa dyshim eshte Ramadan Sokoli. Nga vitet gjashtėdhjetė (nė kohėn kur isha student i Akademisė sė Muzikės nė Beograd) isha njohur dhe i kisha konsultuar dy vepra tė Ramadan Sokolit: “Folklori muzikor shqiptar” dhe “Veglat muzikore tė popullit shqiptar”, mė pas gradualisht vazhdova tė njihesha edhe me tėrė veprimtarinė tjetėr tė tij. Por takimi ynė i parė fizik ndodhi nė Tiranė, nė shtator tė vitit 1995, nė banesėn e tij tė “famshme” “bodrumin-muze”. Unė kisha shkuar si anėtar i Jurisė sė Festivalit Folklorik Kombėtar qė atė vit u mbajt nė Berat. Nga ai takim, lidhjet tona u bėnė shumė tė afėrta si profesionale e po ashtu edhe miqėsore.

Një ekspeditë folklori në Shqipërinë komuniste

Në vitin 1975, një grup folkloristësh gjermanë do të nisnin aventurën nëpër Shqipëri. Të ngarkuar me mjetet e nevojshme, do të shkelnin fshatra të thellë në kërkim të mbledhjes së këngëve popullore. Ishte një punë që e kishin bërë edhe në vende të tjera. Por ashtu siç ata e përshkruajnë më vonë, nëse pjesë të historisë, gjeografisë dhe zakone të Shqipërisë bëheshin të ditura nëpër raporte udhëtimesh që mbanin diplomatët e përfaqësive të huaja, folklori kishte mbetur një njollë e bardhë. Me dëshirën për të eksploruar diçka të re, Doris e Erich Stockmann së bashku me Ëilfried Fiedler mbërrijnë në Shqipëri. Të shoqëruar nga profesor Ramadan Sokoli dhe Albert Paparisto, si pjesë e palës shqiptare, për 3 muaj ata do të shkelnin pjesën jugore të Shqipërisë. Kjo ishte ekspedita shqiptaro-gjermane e vitit 1957. Atëherë, prof. Sokoli ishte vetëm 37 vjeç e në hapat e para të marrjes me folklorin. Ndërsa sot, me peshën e viteve mbi supe e kujton si një eksperiencë shumë interesante.

New Networks for a New Local Music

A plea for more intercultural musical exchanges between Switzerland and the Balkans, presented at the International Symposium «Urban Music in the Balkans» in Tirana 2006.

When it comes to music from the Balkans, most of the concert organisers, music journalists and audiences in Switzerland ask for musical «diversity». They select certain musicians and ensembles, which they believe to be traditional. Or they jump on the latest trends in club culture, and book DJ’s and producers who melt electronic beats with «traditional» Balkan melodies and instruments. The losers are – as elsewhere in the world of music - the musicians and composers who try to create more complex, contemporary, well developed musical languages. And: The musicians who do not know how to sell themselves, how to network successfully, how to contact foreign arts councils.

In the process of intense “Europeanisation”, which for the citizens of southeastern Europe has in recent years gone beyond mere current politics, taking the shape of a distinct struggle for a “better life”, whose outcome is within reach and which, as was formulated in one of the oft repeated phrases, “can and should be led by each one of us”, the idea of the Balkans as a unique cultural area has attained a new vigor. After the winds of war at the end of the 20th century, and in spite of the still unresolved Kosovo issue, the Balkans as a region in which models of multicultural social communities have existed for centuries, has once again become a metaphorical (yet also real) area which has something to offer to Europe and the world.

Rigjetja e “Skënderbeut” të Vivaldit

Në një shkrim botuar në të përditshmen “Korrieri” me ngjyrat sensacionale të një “scoop”-i gazetaresk mësohet se është zbuluar një vepër operistike, që siç autori lë të kuptohet, ishte “mbajtur e strukur” nga vetë Vivaldi, e i ishte kushtuar pikërisht heroit tonë kombëtar Gjergj Kastriotit. Kur lexova këtë, m’u krijua përshtypja se isha shumë i vjetër në moshë, biles ndoshta edhe kisha vdekur, e në botën e përtejme po dëgjoja për “rigjetjen” e “Skënderbeut” të Vivaldit. Megjithëse kemi kaluar në mijëvjeçarin e tretë, kanë kaluar vetëm 25 vjet nga botimi i veprës të Prof. Ramadan Sokolit, “Figura e Skënderbeut në muzikë”, në të cilën, një kapitull i veçantë i kushtohet figurës të Skënderbeut në muzikën e kompozitorëve të huaj. Autori, Prof. Sokoli, si gjithnjë është i kursyer në fjalë, por na jep një informacion të saktë, se çfarë duhet të presim nga Vivaldi dhe opera e tij “Skënderbeu”.
